What Is Cat Anorexia- How To Treat

Cat Anorexia is a condition where your cat has no appetite for food, which can lead to weight loss and serious health issues. This article will provide you with ways to treat cat anorexia.

Symptoms

Symptoms of cat anorexia include a lack of desire to go near their food dishes, hiding and running away when they hear the sound of the food bowl being put down weight loss, and dehydration. Not eating is one way your cat can express his anxiety or stress. Cats are notoriously finicky eaters, but a prolonged lack of appetite is not normal behavior for a cat. If you notice your cat is losing weight rapidly or not eating at all you should take him to the vet.

Causes

There are several reasons a cat may become anorexic such as:

– Environmental factors like being cooped up indoors and not having access to the outdoors

– Changes in meal schedules/timing

– Food allergies/intolerances (the more common reason why pets get sick)

– Habituation to eating wet food, replacing the natural instinct that a cat should have to hunt and eat. Dry food is not as nutritious as other kinds of pet foods. Check the labels of what cats should be eating and make sure there is a lot of protein in the diet. One of the main reasons cats become anorexic is because their owners are feeding them a non-nutritious diet.

Treatment

The best treatment for cat anorexia is to feed a high protein, nutrient-dense diet with a good amount of vitamins and minerals. The pet food that you buy should have a good amount of calories (40% or more) the fat content will be around the 10-15%, and then 3% should be extra fiber which will help to prevent constipation. Treat your cat’s anorexia with an appetite stimulant such as a feline prescription diet or veterinary diet. You can also try feeding him wet food which some cats prefer to dry food and treat wet food anorexia as well because it’s not very nutritious in itself but it provides a variety of nutrients at one time.
