How To Improve Your Puppy Socialization

There is nothing as good as a new puppy in your life. The only problem is, you live with an older adult who will be more than a little put out by a new member of the family. This person is not only old enough to grumble and complain, but also might scoff at any effort to make him the center of attention. This can make getting your dog adjusted to his new home difficult. Fortunately, there are strategies you can use that are simple and cheap to help your dog become socialized with other household members and pets as quickly as possible. Here are some tips on how to improve puppy socialization.

Find out what makes your dog happy, because it is unlikely he will like everything! Let your pet rule the roost by always being allowed to do what he wants when he wants, even if it is something that would irritate another family member or pet (e.g. grabbing the other dog by the neck, or knocking over the coffee table) is a sure-fire way to have him become unhappy and fearful.

Make your dog your best friend by looking for solutions that work with your own life and plans. Dogs who don’t know they want to be with people are less likely to become aggressive toward external threats because there is nothing to make them want to do that. Make sure they get lots of attention and play time (and not simply, “hey look at me!”).

Keep the puppy on a leash or in a crate during the first week or two in his new home. This will prevent him from becoming too comfortable around family members and will give you time to get him adjusted and assimilated into the household as fast as possible.

By improving puppy socialization, you can have a happier and more well-adjusted dog than he would if he just came home and jumped on the couch. You can also get your older family members to deal with him appropriately, which will save you from a lot of unpleasant stress because of their bad behavior.
