Five Steps For Making A Bird Feeder

Bird feeders are a great way to attract a variety of different feathered visitors to your yard, and while you can always buy just one, they’re really easy (and fun) to make your own. While they may look nice, many wildlife organizations discourage the use of wood to make bird feeders because they can get moldy and may contain chemicals that could make the birds sick. Luckily, there are plenty of other things you can use to make your bird feeder.

Method: Use a milk jug.

1. Mark 2 round openings on the bottle and the holes below.

Use a marker to trace 2 circular openings about 2-4 inches (5.1-10.2 cm) in diameter from the handle on the side of the pot. Mark the opening about halfway down the pot so you have room to add birdseed without spilling it out. Just below the opening, draw a small circle about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, which is where you will add the perches. Make sure the milk jug is clean so it doesn’t smell or get moldy.

If you don’t have a marker, use a pencil or pen.

2. Use scissors to cut the opening and poke the hole.

Take a pair of scissors and carefully cut the opening along the line you marked. The cuts should be uniform so that there is no jagged edge to the opening. Then, use the sharp end of the scissors to push through the small hole you marked just below the opening.

The holes don’t need to be precise or have smooth edges because you’re pushing the wooden nail rod through them. You can also use a utility knife if you wish.

3. Push 5 to 6-inch (13 to 15 cm) screw rods into the holes below the opening.

Screws are small wooden rods used to join pieces of wood together, but they are also perfect habitats for bird feeders. Take out your screw rods and push them into the hole you poked just below the opening. Push them in so that they are firmly anchored, but still have about 3-4 inches (7.6-10.2 cm) sticking out of the front for the bird to perch while it eats. You can find wooden nail poles at your local hardware store, department store, or by ordering online. If you don’t have screws, you can use plastic straws or even a stick suitable for drilling.

4. Fill the pot with birdseed and tie the string around the top.

Pour the bird seeds through one of the openings, filling the pot about halfway so the seeds don’t spill out. Wrap a piece of string around the top of the pot and tie it in a tight knot. You can use rope, twine, or wire.

5. Hang bird feeders outside to attract birds.

Tie the string to a tree branch or hang it on a porch so it can be easily seen by birds in the area. Hang the feeder near a window so you can watch the birds eat from inside. Hang the feeder at least 3-4 feet (0.91-1.22 m) off the ground so squirrels and other small animals can’t get to it. It may take some time for birds to start coming to your feeder. But once they learn where the feeder is and get used to using it to feed, you could have a steady stream of bird visitors. Whenever you notice a shortage of seeds in the feeder, replenish them.

Conclusion

A bird feeder can be made from a milk jug. This is great! Try yourself!
