Eight Steps To Make Outdoor Window Bird Feeders
Now, let’s use a clean plastic bottle with a lid to make an outdoor window bird feeder.
1. Choose a plastic juice or water bottle and rinse it off so there isn’t any residue that could attract mold or bacteria.
Make sure the bottle has a lid that can be used to seal it so the seeds don’t spill out or get wet. A soda bottle will work too, just make sure you rinse it out. If there are any wrappers or labels in the bottle, remove them.
2. Poke two small holes in the bottom of the bottle.
Turn the bottle over and take a pair of scissors or a knife and poke 2 holes in the bottom.
Make the holes about ⁄2 inches (1.3 cm) apart. Make sure the holes are wide enough for the twine to fit through them.
3. Thread twine or wire through the hole and tie a knot to make a loop.
Take a piece of twine or wire and insert it into one of the holes you have made. Thread the twine or wire through the bottom of the other hole and pull it through. Tie a knot to form a loop that enables you to hang the bottle.
The length of the twine or rope will determine how far the feeder can be hung. For example, a 12-inch (30 cm) length of twine or string will hang farther than a 4-inch (10 cm) length of twine or string. The bottom of the bottle will become the top of the bird feeder.
4. Cut out 2 holes on the opposite side of the bottle about 3 inches (7.6 cm) from the cap.
Use a pair of scissors or a knife to cut out a small hole about ⁄2 inches (1.3 cm) in diameter near the cap. The openings should be uniform and not have jagged edges. Then, directly opposite it, make another hole of the same size, so that there are two holes in the bottle.
5. Slide a chopstick through the holes.
Take a chopstick and insert it into a hole you made near the cap. Slide it across the bottle and through the other opening. Push the chopstick until it sticks out two holes at equal lengths to create a habitat for your feeders. Go to your local Chinese restaurant and find a cheap pair of chopsticks that you can use.
If you don’t have chopsticks, you can use a stick or a straw.
6. Punch a 3-inch (0.85 cm) hole 2 inches (5.1 cm) above the habitat.
Above the perch, use your knife or scissors to cut a hole for the birds to access the seeds inside the feeder. Make the opening even and consistent, without sharp edges that might cut the bird.
The hole just needs to be big enough for the bird to poke its beak into it and grab some birdseed.
7. Fill the bottle about halfway with birdseed and screw on the cap.
Remove the cap and pour the bird droppings into the bottle through the mouth. Fill the bottle about halfway, then put the cap back on. Tighten it so that the seeds don’t spill out.
8. Hang the bird feeder outside near a window or on a branch.
Attach the bird feeder to a low-hanging branch with a loop or hang it from a porch hook. Place the feeder in an area that is clear of obstructions so that birds can see it and avoid areas where squirrels or other small animals can access it, such as near a fence or on a branch with other branches around it that they can use to climb onto the feeder.
Conclusion
Only a plastic bottle can make an outdoor window bird feeder and so try it! Come on!
