There is no one perfect Hanukkah decoration, so don’t worry if your idea of a perfect party isn’t on the list. This article is meant to spark your imagination, in order to help you make this holiday one that everyone can enjoy. You can make these decorations from things like aluminum foil and wrapping paper or even recyclable materials around the house such as newspaper or cardboard.
1. Star of David
Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting the menorah, and the three branches of the candleholders represent the three gifts received by the Jewish people during Hanukkah. In order to make this decoration you will need cardstock or heavyweight paper. The Star of David is a six-pointed star so to get started tracing a six-point star template. Then cut out your star and punch a hole in each corner.
2. Garland
You can use this decoration as table decor, too. Cut out a large piece of cardboard or paper and color it with a neon crayon. Then starting at one end of your shape unfold each color into place. Once you have your shapes on the paper you may have to tape the ends together. If not simply arrange them so they are hanging in the shape of a garland, or lie flat and then wrap the tape around them to hold them in place until you’re ready to hang them up.
3. Menorah Garland
In the past, families have made a chandelier out of the menorah. This can be a lot of fun to do and can make your house shine during Hanukkah. To make this decoration you will need some paper that resembles that used for gift wrap and some aluminum foil. For an even more elaborate chandelier, you can use ribbons, beads, and glitter as well. Cut out triangles for each branch of your menorah and then tape them together. Then make another triangle with the aluminum foil and hang it from the middle of the paper triangle.
4. Dreidel Candle
This decoration is perfect for both inside and outside your house. Cut out a star shape and then draw a circle around it with the gold paint. Allow it to dry and then attach a candle to the center. Once the candle is in place you can slide it up into the hole of your star so you don’t have to worry about holding it in place while you light the candle.
5. Star of David Wreath
Wreaths are great for decorating your door because they can be hung for almost any occasion, and if you make them out of recyclable materials they can be reused year after year. Cut out two large triangles from heavy paper or cardstock, with some white paper attached on one side as well as on top just inside the edge of one triangle’s base.
