A Guide To Corgi Care
1. Brushing
Both the Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Cardigan Welsh Corgis shed a lot during the entire year, typically in the spring and fall. Excessive hair might form knots or cover dirt under its coat, and that might cause skin issues. Therefore, it is important to brush your corgi’s coat regularly (preferably once every day). This reduces irritation from the dead hairs getting tangled in the healthy coat. Make sure to use a good comb.
2. Bathing
To better help your corgi puppy to remove dead hair and odor, bathing is still something that needs to be done on a regular basis. Ideally, the frequency should be once a week, or roughly 2-4 times a month. When bathing, make sure to use shampoos that won’t irritate or dry out the skin. Afterward, make sure to use a blow dryer to gently remove moisture from the fur.
3. Teeth cleaning
Oral health is also a crucial part of Corgi care that cannot be ignored. Untreated periodontitis can lead to severe consequences. One way to reduce the chance of having periodontal issues is to provide your puppy with beneficial, long-lasting, and healthy chews. The mechanical motion of chewing helps prevent plaque build-up and break up tartar. Meanwhile, it would also be great to add manual tooth-brushing into your corgi care routine for it gives a more thorough cleaning to the teeth.
4. Ear cleaning
An ear infection could cause a lot of pain for your puppy as well! Make sure you use earwax or even better, a properly formulated ear rinse to clean your puppy’s ear regularly.
5. Nail trimming
Nail maintenance is another important aspect that is often neglected in corgi care. Excessively long nails are not only unsightly but also affect the proper posture of the paw, which affects the overall posture of your corgi. Therefore, don’t forget to use a nail clipper to trim your corgi’s nails once they get too long!
