Travel, Cruise Down The Rhine, And Visit Schloss Dyck Castle On A Bike

INTRODUCTION

Cycling along the banks of the Rhine River is made easy with miles and miles of dedicated bike paths, so when a wine castle bike ride was suggested by the Cruise Director many of us were grateful for the chance to get some exercise.

WINE CASTLE BIKE RIDE

We were in the Rhineland Region of Germany in the early Autumn and were to visit Schloss Dyck Castle a gorgeous moated castle nearly 1,000 years old. The main buildings are spread over four islands, and the castle is a fine example of early Baroque architecture. The castle was built in 1094 when it was known as a simple fortification. Cycling through the countryside was a beautiful experience in the warm Autumn weather.

THE WINERY AND GARDENS

Marking a new phase of Schloss Dyck’s history in 1999, an ambitious gardening project was commenced. The project comprises landscape work and garden art and now has a small boutique winery. The garden project is supported by generous donations and will eventually become self-supporting. Visitors can see 24 contemporary experimental gardens, including the grape vines. When visiting the Rhine Region grape vines are everywhere and the ride concluded with a ride through a local vineyard and a wine tasting to round off the bike ride.

THE RHINE RIVER

The Rhine is 820 miles long and the German section where we cycled is Germany’s biggest growing wine area.

Visiting a castle in Germany is mandatory and Schloss Dyk Castle is one of the most beautiful and was owned by the same family for 900 years.

We sipped the Rhine Reisling as the sun went down over the lovely landscaped gardens, and wondered at our good fortune in seeing this magical place, then it was time to ride our bikes back to the river cruise boat before darkness fell.
