Buying Tips For Diamond Pendants You Should Know

Jewelry stores often offer diamond pendants at seemingly reasonable prices, but some of the diamonds they’re using aren’t as valuable as they could be. To ensure that you’re getting a quality piece of jewelry, make sure to follow these tips when shopping for diamond pendants.

1. Assess the Diamond’s Cut

The most valuable diamonds don’t have to be the largest ones. The proportions and symmetry of a diamond are as important as its carat weight, so when you’re checking out diamond pendants, look at the cut of each individual stone. Look for diamonds that have small flaws evenly distributed throughout their faceting, because these flaws can make a diamond look more attractive.

2. Understand Diamond Grading Terms

Not all grades are created equal. The most expensive diamond for sale today is the heart-shaped diamond. And although the fancy colorless diamond is the most valuable, you’re less likely to find one of those at your local jeweler. Instead, you’re likely to see a fancy yellow diamond or a fancy deep blue diamond. The best way to determine what type of gemstone you’re buying is to check out the certification and grading information on its certificate of authenticity (COA).

3. Make Sure the Diamond Can Measure Up

Even if a diamond is priced at a bargain, don’t buy it if it can’t be measured. This is because even the cheapest diamonds have been certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and using non-certified stones can confuse your diamond at a later date. Plus, you don’t want to pay more for a diamond than it’s worth. However, some jewelers will offer to perform an independent diamond grading report for you.

4. Compare Prices

You may be tempted to buy a diamond for less than it’s priced at your local jeweler, but you should still compare the prices at the other stores in town. You’re probably going to find that five other stores are selling the same diamond for more money.

5. Know Your Options

Even if you’re not shopping for a diamond, you can still learn something about it by checking out its cut, color and clarity ratings before deciding whether to buy it or not. You should also know how to care for the diamond and what to do in case of damage.
